A Norwegian study examines how broadening a leader’s span of supervision, the number of subordinates, negatively affects leadership effectiveness and organizational outcomes. Findings show that wider spans limit a leader’s ability to provide tailored, supportive, and directive actions. This reduction in effective leadership is linked to diminished follower performance, increased social loafing, and a higher propensity for employees to quit. The study underscores the necessity for a more nuanced understanding of the implications of hierarchical changes.
