Organizations often remove physical barriers like walls and cubicles to stimulate collaboration and collective intelligence through increased face-to-face interaction. A Harvard study reveals, however, that open-plan workspaces have the opposite effect: employees rely more on digital communication than before the walls came down. Removing physical boundaries creates psychological ones, leading employees to interact less in person to preserve their privacy
