In innovation-driven industries, a project leader’s social status functions as a double-edged sword. While high status provides access to valuable resources and support, it also triggers cognitive overload and evaluation bias from decision-makers. Consequently, an intermediate level of status yields the most consistent average performance. Conversely, high-status leaders are associated with extreme outcomes, producing either groundbreaking successes or catastrophic failures that can threaten an organization’s survival.
